How Do I Know If My Shocks or Struts Are Bad?

I remember when my rear strut failed and it sounded like someone was trying to break out of my car! I'm not kidding you, it seriously sounded like someone struggling to break free from the clutches that was my trunk. Come to find out it was directly related to driving up and down my friend's long bumpy driveway (maybe a little too fast ) all the time. This freaky little incident made it easy for me to know when my struts were bad, but not all situations are the same.
So, are your shocks or struts bad? It's a question we hear all the time. Although we'd love to give you an easy yes or no, without looking at the vehicle, it’s hard to have a good answer.

Every wheel has either a Shock or a Strut – never both, never neither. But, it's possible to have Struts on your front wheels and Shocks on your rear wheels. So here are some signs to help you at least recognize if you should have them checked out and/or replaced by your local shop.
  • You notice a tire shake, shimmy, or vibration after hitting a bump.
  • Your suspension bottoms out on rough roads or when backing out of a driveway.
  • You experience a bouncy ride.
  • You feel your vehicle sway or rock when cornering or driving.
  • Your vehicle nose-dives when braking hard.
  • You notice fluid leaking from a Strut or Shock.
After thousands of miles, Suspension and ride control components will wear out. The rougher the roads, the harder the impact, the faster these parts will wear out.
Hitting a curb or deep pothole could bend a Strut, causing an Alignment problem and damaged Tires.
We should always replace Shocks and Struts in pairs. Performance Shocks and Struts can provide improved handling.
